Sadly this still continues in the Bewcastle area, sometimes as often as twice a week, despite it being illegal. Some folk have a blood lust for cruel sports and little regard for local feelings, even driving the hounds through gardens, and most of the hound followers are from outside the area.

Unfortunately the police are too thinly stretched to take effective action and anti-hunt groups often cause considerable stress to farm animals in their reckless pursuit of the hunt. It is hoped that increasing repugnance for hunting will result in huntsmen gradually becoming social outcasts, in much the same way as dog-fighting and badger-baiting is slowly disappearing.
