What to seeAn area of wild beauty with views extending from the Scottish hills in the north, glimpses of the Solway to the west, and the wide vista of Lakeland's hills to the south, this is a great place to be. In winter, the hard frozen fells are a good place to walk off Christmas excesses. Spring is late in these parts, but all the more welcome for it's blush of green. Lambing is often delayed till April. Summer shows off a countryside that has hardly changed in centuries. With much of the land given over to grazing, there is little need or desire for herbicides or pesticides, and the hedgerows are alive with wild flowers and insects. Sheep and cattle wander the roads, and the dry stone walls usually sport a pheasant, or sometimes a buzzard. Autumn brings chill winds, scent of wood smoke and the echo of crows to one of the last remnants of wild countryside. A local guide book, The Bewcastle Miscellany, is well worth a read. While the entire Bewcastle and Askerton area is well worth exploring, there are certain features that are particularly recommended. The following links give more information. |
